Ghost Mode explained: what it is and why teens need it

An app that won't let you disappear for a while is a leash. That's why Ghost Mode exists, why minors have a minimum, and why this keeps the app on a kid's phone.

Snapchat called it “Ghost Mode” in 2017, and the idea stuck: being visible on a map with your friends and, whenever you want, disappearing for a while without explaining yourself. In a family location app it matters even more, because the alternative is that the teen turns off the phone's location entirely or uninstalls the app. And then you lose everything, including SOS.

The three modes

  • Precise: your exact spot on the map.
  • Fuzzy: just the area, not the exact place. Your family knows you're “somewhere in Malasaña,” not which doorway you're in.
  • Ghost: invisible. You don't appear on the map. But you're still in your circle: you can tap “I'm okay,” chat, call, and, if something happens, send an SOS, which always shares your location no matter what mode you're in.

In Mi Estela you switch it with one tap, whenever you want, and it goes both ways: what you see of the other person, they see of you.

Why it's good for parents (yes, for parents)

Because it's the difference between an app that lasts and one that gets uninstalled. A 16-year-old who knows they can go invisible on a Saturday night has no reason to delete the app. And on Saturday night they still have SOS, the chat with their sister, and the “I've arrived” button. A teen who can't disappear turns off their phone's location, and then there's nothing at all.

The minimum for minors

There's an important detail. Between the age of digital consent in their country (14 in Spain) and 18, minors' accounts have a safety minimum: they share at least their general area. They can use fuzzy mode (not showing their exact spot), but not full Ghost Mode. It's a balance: real privacy, without a minor disappearing completely.

Exit mode: disappearing with a heads-up

For nights out there's something better than Ghost Mode: exit mode. You say what time you'll be back, and if you don't say anything, the app lets your people know. In between, nobody has to ask you anything. When you get home, one tap on “I've arrived” and everyone can go to sleep.

What Ghost Mode is not

It's not a hidden history that parents can check later: in Mi Estela, each person turns on the trail, for whoever they choose, and turns it off without notifying anyone. And it's not a trick: when someone is in Ghost Mode, they simply don't show up on the map; a fake position is never shown. Honesty is part of the deal.

More on how privacy works person to person: precise, by area, or Ghost Mode. And for parents reading this with doubts: how to share location with your teenager without keeping tabs on them.
