Sharing location on group trips: WhatsApp, Maps, Telegram or a circle
Ten friends, three hotels, a festival and a phone at 12% battery: sharing location in a group is more than dropping a pin. Here's what each tool does, when WhatsApp is enough, and when a circle with everything in one place is worth it.

On a friends' trip, a bachelor party or a festival, the question isn't "where are you?" but "where are all of you?": who has reached the campsite, who's still at the beach bar, where we're meeting at nine. Each tool solves one part.
WhatsApp: for the day
In the group, each person shares their live location (15 minutes, 1 hour or 8 hours) and everyone appears on the same map. Encrypted, nothing to install. The catch: after 8 hours it turns off and has to be switched on again, and there are no alerts. Step by step.
Google Maps: one by one, no time limit
You share "until I turn it off" with each person (or by link, 24 hours max). For ten friends that's a lot of individual shares, but it doesn't expire. How to do it.
Telegram: the proximity alert
Same as WhatsApp (15 min, 1 h, 8 h, in groups) plus the proximity alert: it tells you when you're within X meters of each other. Perfect for finding each other at a festival with no signal to call.
A friends circle: everything in one place
Family location apps aren't just for families. In Mi Estela you can have a friends circle separate from your family one (each circle is independent), and inside it: the map with everyone's photo and battery level, "I've arrived" in one tap, the midpoint to pick where to meet halfway, plans and votes to decide what's next, the pot to pool money for the house or a gift, shared expenses (who paid what and who owes whom), the shared kitty, and Bizum (Spain) with your people (you say how much you need and they send it in one tap). And each person chooses whether they show up precisely, area only, or invisible: whoever goes to bed early doesn't have to explain themselves. Mi Estela for friends and groups.
Travel tips that don't depend on the app
- Agree on a fixed meeting point beforehand in case everything falls apart (the campsite entrance, the fountain in the square).
- Bring a power bank for the group: no battery, no map.
- Outside the EU, data matters: without data, location freezes until the next wifi. What happens without signal.
- Consent among friends too: whoever doesn't want to share doesn't share, and nobody asks why.
