Apple Watch for Kids Without an iPhone: Find Them, Call, School Time
If your family uses Apple and your child is too young for an iPhone, there's a third option between a Chinese GPS watch and a phone: an Apple Watch with cellular, set up from a parent's iPhone. Here's what it does, what it needs, and what it doesn't do.

Apple calls it Family Setup (and more recently, "Apple Watch For Your Kids"): an Apple Watch with cellular that doesn't need its own iPhone, because a parent or guardian sets it up and manages it from theirs. It works for a child, and also for a grandparent who doesn't want a smartphone.
What it allows
- See where they are in the Find My app on the organizer's phone, just like with any member of Family Sharing.
- Calls and messages with contacts approved by the parents; Siri, Messages in iCloud, emergency contacts, and Medical ID.
- School Time: during class hours the watch locks into a mode that only shows the time.
- Activity, Photos, Apple Cash Family (for under-18s), and "Ask to Buy" to approve downloads.
What you need
- An Apple Watch Series 4 or later with cellular, or an Apple Watch SE with cellular, running watchOS 7 or later.
- An iPhone for the organizer (iPhone 6s or later, iOS 14 or later), only for setup.
- An Apple Account for the child inside a Family Sharing group, with two-factor authentication.
- A data plan for the watch with a carrier that supports the feature. In Spain, Movistar has offered it since 2021; ask your carrier before buying the watch.
Limits worth knowing
- It isn't available in every country (Apple cites Italy, Korea, and mainland China among those where it isn't).
- Several health features have minimum ages (heart rate notifications, 13; fall detection, 18), and there's no ECG, Sleep, blood oxygen, or international roaming.
- You can't pay with cards from Wallet, only with Apple Cash Family.
- It's a watch: the battery lasts a day. If it isn't charged, there's no location.
Compared with a GPS watch for kids
A classic GPS watch is cheaper and works with any parent's phone; the Apple Watch costs more, requires the organizer to have an iPhone, and in exchange it's a real watch, backed by the Apple ecosystem and without dubious-origin apps. When the child moves to a phone, the natural next step is parental controls and, from age 14, a circle app like Mi Estela, which works on iPhone and Android.
