WhatsApp Live Location: When It's Enough and When You Need an App
WhatsApp is perfect for "I'm on my way." For "tell me when they get home every day," it isn't, and that's not WhatsApp's fault: they're different things.

Before installing anything, try what you already have. WhatsApp has shared live location since October 2017, and for many situations it's enough. Here's how it works, its limits, and when a family location app adds something WhatsApp doesn't.
How it works
In any chat (one-on-one or group), tap the clip (Android) or the "+" (iPhone), choose "Location" and "Share live location," then pick how long: 15 minutes, 1 hour, or 8 hours, which is the maximum. It stops on its own when the time runs out or when you tap "Stop sharing." In Settings › Privacy › Live location you can see who you're sharing with and stop everything. It's end-to-end encrypted, needs GPS and internet, and is off by default.
What it's very good for
- "I'm on my way, I'll let you know where I am" to one specific person.
- Meeting up at a concert, a fair, or a beach.
- Letting someone see you get to a blind date or get home safely at night for an hour.
What it's not good for
- Continuous presence. After 8 hours it turns off. If you want your family to see you "at home" or "on my way" every day, you'd have to turn it on every morning.
- Arrival alerts. There are no saved places and no alerts: you have to check the map yourself.
- Shared battery, SOS, history. None of these exist.
- Several people at once. In a group it works, but each person shares on their own, with no shared map showing faces.
What a circle app adds
A map with the faces of your people, their battery level, and "home since 8:43," without having to turn anything on each day. Alerts when someone arrives home, at school, or at work. An SOS that alerts your circle with your location. And in Mi Estela, also chat, calls and video calls between iPhone and Android, Ghost mode to disappear for a while, and the Pact. The essentials are free and ad-free.
Both together
You don't have to choose. WhatsApp is still where you talk with everyone; a circle app is for your real people. In fact, in Mi Estela you invite your circle by sending the link over WhatsApp, and the link for someone without the app to keep you company for a while (live sharing) also goes out via WhatsApp. The full comparison, with a table and sources: Mi Estela vs. WhatsApp.
